About Plastic Surgery
Why
is it called plastic surgery? Plastic Surgery derives its name from
the Greek work "plastikos" which means to remodel or restore. In addition to
cosmetic treatments, plastic surgeons routinely perform hand, pediatric, reconstructive,
and cancer surgery.
Is
it covered by medical insurance? Most reconstructive
procedures, including those for breast cancer, skin cancer, congenital &
pediatric deformities, and hand surgery related to disease or trauma are
covered my medical insurance, subject to the limitations in a patient's
specific policy. Cosmetic procedures are generally not covered by most
insurance carriers. We participate with many insurance plans.
For an up-to-date list of our participating plans, please visit the
health
plan page on the SMG website.
Who is an ideal candidate? A healthy person
who seeks to improve appearance and is realistic about his or her
expectations. Although It is important to realize that plastic surgery will
not change who you are, research has shown that most patients' evaluation of
their own appearance
improves significantly.
Can I
afford plastic surgery? We understand cosmetic surgery can be costly.
There are a number of ways to finance these expenses. Our staff
will happily review the exact costs and payment options with you during your
consultation.
How should I choose a plastic surgeon?
Only physicians with significant, lengthy, and rigorous training in a
surgical field followed by training in an accredited plastic &
reconstructive surgery training program are eligible to become
board-certified in plastic surgery. When considering a plastic surgery
procedure, be sure to ask your doctor if he or she is board-certified by the
American Board of Plastic Surgery, or
by a board in another specialty. Patients should also realize that the
some "board-certified" physicians are not certified by one of the main
boards of the American Board of Medical
Specialties (ABMS). Such certifications are not generally
considered by most reputable physicians as carrying much weight, since even
physicians without plastic surgery training may apply and receive these
non-ABMS bodies. Always check
the status of your doctor with the ABMS, or search for your plastic
surgeon through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' Referral Service
by web
search or by phone at 1-888-4-PLASTIC.
Who is a 'REAL' plastic surgeon? Any doctor can
refer to himself and advertise as a "Cosmetic Surgeon" regardless of
training and experience. Patients must realize that only qualified
surgeons who have completed rigorous surgical training followed by a
residency in Plastic Surgery are true, bona fide, "Plastic Surgeons".
Although a licensed doctor may lawfully practice in any
medical field of medicine, it is important to ask your doctor if he or she holds
privileges to perform your desired procedures in a reputable hospital.
Only physicians who are appropriately trained and have the appropriate
knowledge and experience are granted hospital operating privileges in
plastic surgery procedures.
What about
what you see on TV and in the news? Unfortunately, television and media often make plastic surgery seem "easy", both for the doctor and the patient.
This is not a specialty doctors can learn by taking weekend courses after training in another field. Plastic surgeons train long and hard, usually for 6 to 8 years after medical school, before they complete their training and start their practice. Additionally, Reza Momeni, MD firmly believes that physicians should broaden their exposure to as many areas in their field as possible. He has traveled
nationally and internationally to learn from the premier minds in his field.
In addition to superior training and experience, Reza Momeni, MD, is associated with the prestigious Summit Medical Group.
You will have access to world-class medicine delivered by top-notch, respected physicians who hold
full hospital privileges at some of the areas' top health institutions.
