Ganglion cysts in wrist, hand, fingers

Description

A ganglion is a type of "lump" that may occur anywhere in the wrist, hand, or the fingers.  It may or may not be painful, and it often continues to get larger.  It is usually connected to bony joints or to tendons, and is a ball-like sac filled with a clear viscous liquid.  Although it can happen on its own, it is sometimes associated with arthritis or prior injury.

Treatments

If the ganglion is small and without symptoms, it may be watched.  However, without removing a lump, there is no way to be certain what it is.  In cases where a ganglion is painful or keeps on growing, it's possible to remove the fluid from the ganglion sac in the office.  In some cases, a ganglion may disappear without any treatment.  Unfortunately, the ganglion returns in most cases after this simple procedure.  The most effective treatment is to to remove the ganglion surgically and clean out the joint area where it comes from.

Surgery

Surgery to remove the ganglion usually takes less than one hour and done as an outpatient.  Patients are discharged home after surgery, and may wear a soft wrist splint for a period after the operation.  Sometime, hand therapy may be ordered to help in the recovery.

Advantages of removal

The most obvious advantage is getting a definitive diagnosis: the "lump" is sent to a pathologist for examination to ensure it is not a concerning tumor.  Also, surgical removal is the best way of reducing the chances that a ganglion may return.

Results

Overall, surgery is very successful for ganglions in the hand and wrist.  Some pain and discomfort may remain for a period after the operation, but with time, patients recover the use of their hands and usually have less pain than they did with the ganglion.

Risks

As in any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications, including anesthesia reaction, bleeding, infection, and nerve or tendon injury. The likelihood of a complication following ganglion removal is very low.  In some cases after surgery, a ganglion may return, and repeat removal may be needed.
