Treatment of Wrist Tendonitis

Description

Tendonitis is a painful condition that affects the wrist and hand.  It happens when a tendon in the elbow, forearm, or hand becomes irritated.  The can cause pain, burning, discomfort, or tingling in the area or around it.  Although the irritation is often caused by a repetitive motion, it also sometimes happens without an obvious cause.

Treatments

Mild, temporary cases may improve with resting the hand, avoiding overuse, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.  If the symptoms do not disappear, patients may be sent for evaluation by a surgeon with expertise in hand surgery.  In some cases, a steroid injection is used for relief of the symptoms.  However, many patients do not improve with these injections.  The most effective treatment for tendonitis is surgery to "release" the irritated tendon.

Procedure

Surgery for tendonitis is usually done under local anesthesia, with an anesthesiologist present to give intravenous sedation.  General anesthesia may also be used based on patient or surgeon's preference.  There is no need for hospitalization.  In this procedure, the doctor numbs the appropriate area, then makes a small incision in the area of the tendon and releases the swollen area to allow easy movement of the tendon.  The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Advantages

Tendonitis release is the most effective way of treating this condition and ensuring lasting results.  Unlike patients treated by medications or with steroid injections, the symptoms rarely return after surgery.

Recovery

Only a light gauze bandage is used, and no cast or splint is made. Patients are encouraged to begin using their fingers and hand soon after surgery.  The stitches are removed in the office 3 weeks after the procedure.  Some mild pain and discomfort is common after the procedure, but it is uncommon to have any serious limitations.

Results

Overall, surgery is very successful, but the results will depend partly on how long the condition has existed and how much damage has been done to the tendon before the operation.  For this reason, it's a good idea to see a doctor early if you think you may have tendonitis symptoms.

Risks

As in any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications, including anesthesia reaction, bleeding, infection, and nerve or tendon injury. The likelihood of a complication following trigger finger release is very low. It is very important that your doctor be trained and experienced in hand surgery techniques.
