Treatment of trigger fingers
Description
Trigger finger
(also known as stenosing tenosynovitis) is a condition affecting the fingers
in active people. It may cause pain in the finger, hand, or forearm,
as well as stiffness, locking of the finger, or a "clicking" sensation when
the finger moves. There may be a bump or tenderness in the palm at the
base of the affected finger. The condition is caused by a swelling
in the tendon that bends the finger, as it moves through it's protective
tunnel in the hand.
Treatments
Mild, temporary cases may improve with resting the hand, avoiding
overuse, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. If the
symptoms do not go away, patients may be sent for evaluation by a surgeon
with expertise in hand surgery. In some cases, a steroid injection
is used for relief of the symptoms. However, many patients do not
improve with these injections. The most effective treatment for
trigger finger is surgery to "release" the irritated tendon.
Procedure
Surgery for trigger fingers is usually done under local anesthesia,
without need for hospitalization. In this procedure, the doctor numbs
the base of the finger, and then makes a small incision over the swollen
area of the tendon and releases the swollen area to allow easy movement of
the tendon. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.
Advantages
Trigger finger
release is the most effective way of treating this condition and
ensuring lasting results. Unlike patients treated by medications
or with steroid injections, the symptoms rarely return in the same finger
after surgery.
Recovery
Only a light gauze bandage is used, and no cast or splint is used.
Patients are encouraged to begin using their fingers and hand soon after
surgery. The stitches are removed in the office 3 weeks after the
procedure. Some mild pain and discomfort is common after the
procedure, but it is uncommon to have any serious limitations.
Results
Overall, surgery is very successful, but the results will depend
partly on how long the condition
has existed and how much damage has been done to the tendon before the
operation. For this reason,
it's a good idea to see a doctor early if you think you may have trigger
finger symptoms.
Risks
As in any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications, including
anesthesia reaction, bleeding, infection, and nerve or tendon injury. The
likelihood of a complication following trigger finger release is very low.
It is very important that your doctor be trained and experienced in hand
surgery techniques.
